Shooting Under the Sea Smiles

June 23, 2016 Anna Keefe

As a famous crab once sang, “Darling it’s better, down where it’s wetter. Take it from me!” He may not have been referring to photography, so here are 3 ways to get the best pictures under the sea:

1. Practice makes perfect.

Both the subject and the photographer need to practice shooting underwater. And smiling while submerged will also get you acclimated to holding your breath. Experiment with different settings, too. With a plethora of pools and oceans, Hawaii’s backdrop options are endless.

2. Snap all action.

Thanks to gravity, it’s not as easy to control your body and smile movements underwater. Instead of concentrating on one perfect pose, snap as many shakas and smiles as possible. The reward comes when the photos come back looking natural and spontaneous.

3. Angle the camera.

For awe-inspiring images, shoot up, rather than down. This tactic pays off, resulting in non-blurry pictures with a clear subject focus. This also allows for a wider scope of scenery, especially when photographing in an ocean.
