Diseases that Need Extra Dental Cleanings

October 11, 2016 Michael Orozco

Routine dental visits make a positive difference for everyone’s body and smile. But did you know people with certain health conditions benefit from extra appointments? Here are 3 diseases where additional dental care can make a difference:

1. Diabetes
Both type 1 & 2 diabetics are at a higher risk of developing gum disease. And it’s a 2-way street. Gum disease can make it harder to control blood sugar levels, which can compromise overall health.

2. Cancer
Cancer treatments—like radiation and chemotherapy—can be catalysts for oral health complications. Radiation exposure can affect salivary glands and oral tissues. Additionally, some chemotherapy drugs increase the risk of jawbone-tissue loss. Establishing a preventive plan that includes increased dentist visits can reduce dental dangers.

3. Kidney Disease
Those with kidney disease and/or undergoing dialysis are prone to gum disease and tooth loss. Periodontal disease typically develops prior to dialysis and becomes more severe throughout treatment. Identifying this risk, in addition to proper treatment, may help prevent the onset or reduce the severity of periodontal problems.

HDS has plans that offer extra cleanings to those with the above conditions. Ask your dentist if you qualify.
