Sweet Smack Down: Sugar vs. Artificial Sweeteners

March 20, 2018 Anna Keefe

Sugar vs. Artificial Sweeteners

Sugar vs. artificial sweeteners—a sweet showdown that stumps even the most health-conscience. Sweetening your coffee isn’t as straightforward as a spoonful of sugar anymore. Here’s what to consider when making your choice:

New and natural options

Artificial sweeteners have come a long way since Sweet’N Low. There are plenty of natural, calorie-free options to choose from—such as stevia, xylitol and erythritol. Unlike sugar, these alternatives are ideal for your pearly whites because they won’t cause cavities. They’re great for diabetics, too!

But calorie-free doesn’t always equal healthy

Natural sweeteners are essentially sugar alcohols. Many people sensitive to these may experience symptoms such as cramping, nausea and headaches. Sugar alcohols also pass through your body mostly undigested. Because of this, your appetite may not be as satisfied as it would with regular sugar.

All things in moderation

When it comes to the battle of sugar vs. artificial sweeteners, take a hint from our favorite nanny. Whether you enjoy calorie-free or cane, make “a spoonful of sugar” your moderation mantra.

Learn how to kick your sugar addiction.
