Your Grin’s Guide to Oahu Farm Life

June 28, 2016 Sara Fossum

The benefits of eating food from local sources are plentiful. Thankfully, local food is found right here on O`ahu. And many are open to the public for tours.

For food that’s ‘ono and tooth-friendly, gather up the `ohana and explore these 4 local farms:

• Aloun Farms

HDS - Aloun Farms

Since 1996, Aloun Farms has provided the people of Hawaii with quality produce and great entertainment. This versatile farm grows a variety of crops but is most popular for its corn.

Pearly white perk: Corn is a great source of phosphorous, which is necessary for bone and tooth development and strengthening.

• Na Mea Kupono Lo`i Kalo

HDS - Na Mea Kupono

This farm is more than food – it’s a cultural experience. Na Mea Kupono is a working wetland taro farm that also offers tours as well as a one of a kind, hands-on experience.

Pearly white perk: This important cultural crop contains several mouth-healthy minerals, including folic acid, potassium and iron.

• Naked Cow Dairy Farm

HDS - Naked Cow

As the only dairy farm on the Oahu, Naked Cow prides itself on the humane and natural treatment of their dairy cows. Tours on this small farm are family-friendly, and keiki can feed the cows and learn about egg laying.

Pearly white perk: We can’t get enough of Naked Cow’s cheese, one of our favorite tooth-friendly treats. Make sure to try the Ko’olau Peppercorn or Hawaii Chili Pika Moon!

• Tropical Farms of Hawaii

HDS - Tropical Farms

A roadside staple since 1987, Tropical Farms provides irresistible macadamia nuts and other treats to keep your mouths watering.

Pearly white perk: Macadamias are packed with nutrients that benefit grins. Including phosphorus and magnesium, which supports teeth mineralization
