Fruits with High Sugar Content: How bad are they?

August 28, 2014 Michael Orozco

Stay away from sugar. Eat plenty of fruit. These are statements we hear constantly.  Following these two golden rules is beneficial to both our oral health and overall health. But what should we do when these two opposing statements contradict each other?

It may surprise you to hear that some of our favorite fruits in Hawaii, such as mangoes and bananas, are loaded with sugar. Although they’re high in nutritional value, the high amount of sugar isn’t 100% ideal. Try switching back and forth between high-sugar fruits and fruits with less sugar.

Fruits Very High in Sugar:

Bananas

Mangoes

Cherries

Fruits with Moderate Amounts of Sugar:

Pineapple

Kiwi

Fruits Low in Sugar:

Papaya

Avocado

Watermelon

Strawberries

Please continue to enjoy your fresh fruit, but be aware of those with higher sugar content. It’s important to remember that the natural sugar found in fruits is always better than the added sugar found in candy, chips and soda.
